Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of synthetic chemicals widely used for their water- and oil-repellent properties, stain resistance, and exceptional chemical and thermal stability
Their unique molecular structure makes them extremely persistent in the environment, earning them the name “forever chemicals”.
Once released, PFAS can remain for decades in water, soil, and living organisms, leading to bioaccumulation and widespread environmental dispersion.
These substances - which include PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and PFHxS - are highly versatile and used in industrial and consumer applications. They are present in large quantities in the agricultural sector, in food packaging, in personal care products (cosmetics), textiles and various consumer products.
