Withdrawal of cosmetics containing Lilial

Do you want to know if your cosmetic products comply with Regulation EU 2021/1902?

Lilial is the common name of the molecule 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, INCI Butylphenyl Methylpropional, CAS 80-54-6, also known as BHMCA. It is a perfuming molecule, contained in fragrance mixtures, widely used in cosmetic products.

After several studies and opinions of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) related to the safety and effects of Lilial on human health, such as toxicity to reproduction, Regulation EU 2021/1902 was published (amendment of Reg. (EC) 1223/2009) classifying Butylphenyl methylpropional as toxic to reproduction and prohibited to be used in cosmetic products starting from 1st March 2022.

However, RAPEX still shows several cosmetic products recalls due that in the labels BHMCA is still declared.

In the latest week (37° week of the year) 56 cosmetics products of different types (shampoos,
creams, lotions, etc) have been retired from the market because of BHMCA declared on the label of those products.

Cosmetic players must therefore be sure that their products comply with Reg. (EC) 1223/2009 and its amendments, and don’t contain any prohibited molecule.

Neotron supports clients performing the analysis of BHMCA by GC-MS technique.
