Strengthening Food Safety Standards for Contaminant Reduction

By lowering maximum limits for contaminants such as deoxynivalenol (DON), the regulation underscores the EU’s commitment to ensuring the highest level of consumer protection. Learn more about the update to EU Regulation 2024/1022 amending EU Reg. 2023/915.

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a mycotoxin produced by fungi commonly found in cereals, poses health risks when consumed in excessive amounts. Recognizing the importance of mitigating these risks, EU regulatory authorities have taken proactive measures to set maximum levels for DON and other contaminants in food products.

One of the notable changes introduced by Regulation 2024/1022, amending the Regulation (EU) 2023/915 and effective from 1 July 2024 is the reduction of maximum limits for DON in various food categories. Specifically, the regulation imposes stricter thresholds for Cereals placed on the market for the final consumer, maize for popping and popcorn. Moreover, it establishes a maximum limit for Pre-cooked polenta ready to eat.

The regulation allows foods legally placed on the market before July 2024 to remain available until their shelf life or expiry date.

Neotron supports clients performing analysis to detect DON in most matrices and in compliance with limits set by the Regulation.
