Neotron performs the accredited analysis of nicotine by GC-MS/MS technique
Nicotine is the main alkaloid in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and other tobacco species where it occurs at concentrations ranging from 2% to 8%. In tobacco plants, nicotine is synthesized in roots, based on nicotinic acid and the amino acid L-ornithine and systematically distributed in the whole plant.
Nicotine was found in low concentrations also in other crops belonging to the family of Solanaceae, such as tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and potatoes (Andersson et al., 2003). Nicotine binds stereo-selectively to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors of autonomic nervous systems, the adrenal cortex, the neuromuscular synapses and in the brain. Because of this activity as agonist of nicotine acetylcholine receptors, nicotine exhibits also insecticidal activities and the compound was used as active substance in plant protection products. Thus, at European level it falls under the legislation for pesticides.
In July 2023 the European Commission published the Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1536 of 25 July 2023, entering into force on 15 September 2023, that amends Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as regards maximum residue levels for nicotine in or on certain products.
In order to guarantee a quality control of this substance, Neotron performs the accredited analysis of nicotine by GC-MS/MS technique for most matrices, such as mushrooms and spices, permitting to detect the residues with a limit of quantification of 0,010 mg/kg.
